How to Register for IELTS in Bangladesh: A Step-by-Step Guide

Registering for IELTS looks simple until you are staring at four test type options, three delivery formats and a calendar of dates that all seem to clash with your application deadline. This guide walks through the decisions in the order you actually have to make them.

Step 1: Decide which IELTS test you need

This is the decision that goes wrong most often, and it is expensive to fix because you cannot change test type after booking without cancelling and rebooking.

• IELTS Academic is for university admission at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and for professional registration bodies such as nursing and medical councils.
• IELTS General Training is for migration to the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and for secondary education or work experience programmes.
• IELTS for UKVI is Academic or General Training taken at a UKVI-approved centre under additional security conditions. It is required for certain UK visa routes and for pre-sessional English courses.
• IELTS Life Skills tests only speaking and listening at A1, A2 or B1 level, for UK family and settlement visa routes.

If a university has told you it accepts "IELTS", but you are applying for a course below degree level or a pre-sessional English programme, check whether they mean UKVI. Booking standard Academic when UKVI was required is the single most common and most costly registration error we see.

Step 2: Choose paper-based or computer-delivered

Both formats are identical in content, difficulty and scoring. The differences are practical.

Computer-delivered releases results in three to five days rather than thirteen, offers more test dates each month, gives you a word count automatically in Writing, and lets you edit text without messy corrections. Choose it if you type comfortably and your deadline is tight.

Paper-based suits candidates who prefer to annotate the Reading passages by hand and underline as they go, and who write faster than they type. You get ten minutes at the end of Listening to transfer answers, which computer-delivered replaces with only two minutes of checking time.

The Speaking test is face to face with a human examiner in both formats. That does not change.

Step 3: Pick a date that works backwards from your deadline

Do not book the earliest date you can find, and do not book the latest one that technically fits. Work backwards:

1. Identify your university application deadline.
2. Allow two to three weeks for the university to process your application after you submit the score.
3. Allow thirteen days for paper results or five days for computer results.
4. Allow a buffer of at least four weeks in case you need to retake.

That means a September intake with a June application deadline needs a test date in March or April, not August. Candidates who leave no retake margin and then miss their band by half a point lose an entire intake.

Step 4: Register through an authorized centre

You can register online yourself, or through an authorized registration partner centre. Registering through an authorized partner such as FRS Global Network costs exactly the same official fee, but you get help selecting the correct test type, choosing a date that suits your deadline, and completing the passport details correctly.

Be cautious of anyone charging above the official fee or promising particular results. No legitimate centre can influence your band score.

Step 5: Get your passport details exactly right

Your name on the IELTS booking must match your passport character for character. The passport number you register with is the identity document you must bring on test day, and it must still be valid on the test date. If your passport expires between booking and testing, or you renew it, you must update the booking before test day or you will be refused entry to the test centre.

Step 6: Confirm and prepare for test day

After payment you receive a confirmation with your test date, reporting time and venue. The Speaking test may be scheduled on a different day, up to a week before or after the other three modules.

On test day bring the same passport you registered with, and nothing else that you need. Phones, watches, bags and notes all go into storage. Arrive at the reporting time stated, not the test start time, because registration and identity verification take time and late arrivals are not admitted.

What to do if you need to reschedule

Transfers and cancellations are possible but the refund depends on how much notice you give. More than five weeks before the test usually means a partial refund; less than five weeks usually means no refund unless you have medical evidence. Check the specific terms at the time of booking.
